When the Museum Came to Bontekids
The stoep became an interactive educational space.
Iziko Museums of South Africa's Outreach Programme brought “Taking the Museum to the People” to BonteKids. Instead of children needing to travel to a formal museum building, museum learning came directly to their community.
Children interacted with bones, fossils, cultural artefacts, preserved animals and science and conservation material. A penguin specimen and ammonites were among the examples that sparked questions and conversation.
The children also took part in a beading activity. The visit showed how education can live anywhere curiosity is welcomed, and gave children direct access to objects that would normally exist inside museum spaces.
Thank you to Iziko Museums of South Africa for creating such a memorable learning experience.
